Why I Write

Writing on FunkyOtter.blog and authoring my books have become incredible journeys of self-discovery and healing for me. As someone who battles PTSD, I find solace in putting my thoughts into words, creating poetry and reflective pieces that capture the essence of my experiences. Each poem, each piece of prose—whether on my blog or in my books—is a step toward understanding myself better and connecting with others who might be on a similar path.

When I released my first book, the most common response was, “Where did that come from?” Nobody knew I was writing a book; I hadn’t told anyone. Writing had always been a private sanctuary for me, a personal refuge where I could explore my thoughts and feelings without inhibition. I had never really shared my writing with anyone before.

However, as I grow in my mental health healing, I’ve decided to open up and share more of my work. My website now reflects this journey, equally focusing on both my blog and my books. It’s a significant step for me, allowing others into a space that was once solely my own.

One particularly memorable moment in this journey happened when I decided to find tranquility in nature, hoping to gain some inspiration for my writing. I ventured into a serene park, the kind that’s supposed to bring peace and calm. I sat under a big oak tree, notebook in hand, ready to pen down some deep, meaningful thoughts. Just as I got into the flow, a squirrel decided I was encroaching on its territory. It started chattering aggressively, inching closer with a menacing glare. In a split second, tranquility turned into chaos as I found myself being chased around the park by this tiny, furious creature.

The incident, while terrifying in the moment, became a humorous reminder of how unpredictable life can be. It also made its way into one of my reflective pieces, highlighting the absurdity and unexpected twists that often accompany our search for peace.

Writing allows me to process these experiences, transforming them from raw, chaotic events into something meaningful and, sometimes, even funny. Through both my blog and my books, I aim to connect with my readers, sharing not just the heavy, emotional moments but also the light-hearted, ridiculous ones that remind us of our shared humanity.

By opening up and sharing my work, I hope to offer a piece of my world to others, hoping that my words resonate, comfort, and maybe even bring a smile. Writing is my refuge, my way of making sense of the world, and my hope is that it can serve as a similar refuge for those who read my work.
